The European Social Fund is one of the Structural Funds of the European Union; it constitutes the main source of financing for OP Competitiveness human resources development actions. Its
mission is to contribute to employment growth through the enhancement of employability, entrepreneurship, adaptability and equal opportunities as well as investment in human resources.
Upgrading the knowledge and skills of the labour force is the best response to the uncertainty prevailing in the labour market, while it also is a basic prerequisite for improving the
competitiveness of Greek businesses.
Given the importance of the human factor in economic growth, and the need to safeguard and create jobs, the Operational Programme ‘Competitiveness’ includes, along with actions to support businesses and improve the business environment, an integrated complex of actions designed to upgrade human resources in the following areas:
- Processing, services and trade
- Research and Technology
The overall budget for these actions amounts to 240.85 million Euro, with 60% of the finance supplied by the European Social Fund, 20% coming from national public resources and 20% from private sources.
